Graduate Medical Education Support

Bayhealth’s medical education programs are instrumental to meeting the growing healthcare needs of our local communities. As we attract talented medical school students and graduates to train here, and hopefully stay to continue their careers, we are expanding upon the number of physicians available to the people of central and southern Delaware. This pipeline of highly-trained primary care physicians and specialists is serving our community now and for many years to come.

Growing Medical Expertise

Our Family Medicine and Internal Medicine Program residents are training under the finest physicians in our region to become exceptional primary care doctors. They are offering attentive and compassionate care to our families today and the next generation. These two programs each have a medical practice locally where residents hone their skills and also see patients, under the supervision of attending physicians. The Family Medicine, Dover practice and the Internal Medicine, Milford practice add more than 30,000 and 20,000 patient care visits, respectively, to our community each year.

Our General Surgery Residency Program is advancing surgical expertise in our region. This is a five-year program attracting the best and brightest surgical residents each year. At the program’s full capacity, a total of 15 resident physicians are trained in the most innovative surgical techniques. They will develop their skills in various surgical sub-specialties including urology, colorectal, endocrine, vascular, cardiothoracic oncologic, breast, trauma, and critical care. By training new surgeons in our area, we can help the underserved community with their surgical needs.

Bayhealth’s Emergency Medicine Residency Program is designed to train new physicians with a passion for providing emergency medicine to our community members in need. A total of eighteen residents in this program will hone their skills in the delivery of urgent care as they work with our seasoned emergency doctors. This program opens up access in our emergency departments to help more local patients get timely services when they need them most.
