Gastric Banding Surgery
The Lap-Band System™ features an adjustable silicone ring that is surgically inserted and placed like a belt around the upper part of your stomach. The ring – or band – is connected by thin tubing to an access port, which your surgeon will adjust by inflating or deflating its inner lining with saline to meet your individual needs.
The ring helps create a new, small upper stomach pouch and leaves the larger part of your stomach below. The new upper pouch is only able to hold a small amount of food at a time, so you feel full sooner and stay full longer even though you’re eating less.
The Lap-Band System™ also controls the size of the opening between the two parts of the stomach and regulates the flow of food from the upper to the lower part, helping to control your appetite.
The Lap-Band System™ surgery is performed laparoscopically as an outpatient procedure. Most patients return to normal activity in about one week.
