Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery

Cardiac Surgery is provided at Kent General Hospital in Dover, Delaware, by Chief of Cardiac Surgery John Mannion, MD, Daniel Marelli, MD and Paul Fedalen, MD. After surgery, patients recover in a private room in our Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CV/SICU).

Services may include a combination of procedures on the heart and blood supply to improve the performance of the heart and quality of life.

Our team of healthcare providers includes our surgeons, nurses, clinical specialists, nurse managers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, discharge planners and care managers, educators, and nutritionists to provide the highest holistic quality of care for our patients in the hospital and at discharge.

Surgical services include:

  • Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) – a blood vessel from another part of the body is used to bypass part of a narrowed or blocked coronary artery. Blood goes through the new blood vessel, avoiding the blocked artery, and improves blood flow to the heart
  • Valve replacement – the damaged valve is removed and replaced with a synthetic valve
  • Valve repair – the valve is reshaped, supported around its base and attached to nearby heart tissues
  • Maze procedure – corrects chronic atrial fibrillation
  • Closure of atrial septal defects and patent foramen ovale in adults – to prevent clot formation leading to stroke

Endovascular Aneurysm Repair

All endovascular aneurysm repairs are provided onsite by cardiac surgeon Daniel Marelli, MD, at Kent General Hospital in Dover, Delaware.

Endovascular aneurysm repair, also known as EVAR, repairs the vessel with a covered stent to prevent the aneurysm from rupturing.
