Your personal numbers…yes, your blood pressure, pulse, and weight can tell you a great deal about your health. That is why Bayhealth nurses take careful readings when you come to one of our STEPS clinics! We may ask you to sit for a few minutes, uncross your feet and your legs so we get the most accurate numbers possible. When we ask you questions about the medicines and “other pills” you take it is because some medications interact with each other. We strive to work with you and your physician/doctor to keep you as healthy as possible and out of the hospital. To stay in STEP, help us watch your numbers by weighing yourself, exercising regularly, watching your calorie intake and keep your doctor appointments! Remember, at Bayhealth we’re here for life!

What is the Breathe Well, Live Well Program?
Are you controlling your asthma, or is your asthma controlling you?
-
Do you avoid physical activities because of your asthma?
-
Has your asthma caused you to miss work?
-
Have your asthma symptoms ever caused you to visit a hospital emergency room?
-
Do you need a medication schedule that really helps you control symptoms?
-
Would you like to stop worrying about your asthma and relax?
If you answered “YES” to any of these questions, help is on the way!
Approximately 20 million adult Americans have asthma, yet many are not aware of how to manage their disease. The American Lung Association’s “Breathe Well, Live Well” program is designed specifically for adults with asthma, to increase their knowledge and self-management skills of this chronic disease.
Participants of this two-part program will meet with a certified asthma educator.

What are Cardiovascular Screenings?
This three-part screening is offered to detect any potential cardiovascular diseases. These tests are painless, non-invasive, and comprised of the following screenings:
Carotid Artery Disease/Stroke Screening
-
This test uses a Doppler to measure blood flow in the carotid arteries of the neck.
-
It will detect blocked circulation to the brain.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening
-
This screening uses an ultrasound to measure the size of the large blood vessel (aorta) in your abdomen.
-
It will detect if you have an aneurysm, which is when the lining of the aorta is enlarged within the abdomen.
Peripheral Arterial Disease Screening
-
This test measures the pressure in your arms and legs by performing blood pressures with a small ultrasound device.
-
It indicates how well blood flows to the legs.
There is a $65.00 fee for all three screenings and pre-registration is required. For more information and to register, please contact the Bayhealth Education Department at 302-744-7135 or 1-877-453-7107.

Your child loves sports. But how do you ensure that she stays safe from potential concussions and head injuries?
To help stem a recent rise in concussions and ensure the safety of high school athletes, Bayhealth Neurosurgeon James Mills, MD, is providing “baseline testing” for student athletes at Polytech and Caesar Rodney High Schools. The “baseline” is a half hour computer test which measures the memory and cognition of the student athlete. The baseline test score will be a valuable frame of reference in comparing against the same student athlete’s test score after he or she suffers a potential concussion.
Clinics are held every Thursday at the office of Dr. James Mills, MD, 540 S. Governors Ave. Appointments are required. For more information about concussion clinics for student and recreational athletes, please contact Bayhealth Neurosurgery at (302) 526-1470.

What is the Delaware Vitiligo Support and Awareness Group?
We are a group of individuals who either have vitiligo or are supportive of individuals who have vitiligo.
During the support group meetings, Vitiligo patients and their families will have the opportunity to offer each other support and discuss common issues and solutions.
Bayhealth Medical Center along with the Delaware Vitiligo Support and Awareness Group offer this free support group for the community.
Vitiligo is a condition that causes depigmentation of patches of skin. It occurs when melanocytes, the cells responsible for skin pigmentation, die or are unable to function. The cause of Vitiligo is unknown, but research suggests that it may arise from autoimmune, genetic oxidative stress or viral causes. The most common form is non-segmental Vitiligo.
Schedule
This group meets the third Friday of each month from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. in the Bayhealth Medical Center Education Building at 208 West Water Street, Dover, Delaware.

Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that occurs only in pregnancy, and usually disappears after childbirth. Gestational diabetes affects about 2-5% of all pregnant women, and is usually detected at 24-28 weeks of pregnancy. Some women with a strong family history of diabetes or a history of gestational diabetes with a previous pregnancy may be tested even earlier, at 16-20 weeks of pregnancy.
It is important to realize that there is an increased risk to develop diabetes later on in life. Women with gestational diabetes will also have increased chance of developing gestational diabetes again in any future pregnancies.
Bayhealth has Gestational Diabetes Management classes every Tuesday from 9 to 11am. The first hour is with the Diabetes Educator and the second hour is with a dietitian. The class is held at the Bayhealth Outpatient Rehab Center.
Topics include:
· Meal planning
· Blood glucose monitoring
· What is gestational diabetes
· Exercise
· Medications
Cost: $0.00

Sibling rivalry. Jealousy. Confusion. How will your young child react when he or she has a new sibling? How will you keep your family in harmony?
The “Hello, Baby” class is a special program for youngsters anticipating the arrival of a new brother or sister in their family.
Specifically designed for children between the ages of three and six, the class will help them adjust to their new role as a big brother or sister. The Child Life Specialist who leads each session uses a variety of techniques to explore each child’s feelings and fears about having a new sibling.
Participants tour the Maternity Department, watch a video, practice diapering their own stuffed animal or doll and learn other basic infant care skills so they can actively participate in the baby’s care.
There is a $5 registration fee for each child, which covers the cost of materials. One parent must accompany the child, although both parents are encouraged to attend. Pre-registration is required. For additional information and to register, call the Education Department at (302) 744-7135 or toll-free at 1-877-453-7107.

We are a group of individuals who either have Hepatitis C or are supportive of individuals who have Hepatitis C.
The group has been established for a few years and there are no requirements or fees to attend. Our meetings are just a good information exchange and an opportunity to spend time and receive support with individuals that understand.
Our discussions include: guest speakers, alternative care ideas, to treat or not to treat; how to work with treatment side effects, support for the diagnosed person and family members, and much more.

How strong are your bones? If you are over 25 years of age, you need to know your bone health! Bayhealth offers osteoporosis screenings at four locations.
What is an Osteoporosis Screening?
Osteoporosis risk is determined by measuring the bone mineral density of your heel. The heel is measured because its bone is similar to that found in the hip, where fractures occur most often. Bone mineral density is a predictor of skeletal strength and fracture risk, especially when considered along with other factors such as gender, age, and family history. The osteoporosis screening simply requires you to place your foot in a painless ultrasound device called a bone densitometer and the bone mineral density of your heel will be measured.
Osteoporosis screening are free and pre-registration is required. For more information and to register for a screening call 744-7135 or 1-877-453-7107.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and is also their second most diagnosed cancer. However, simple screenings may help detect prostate cancer in its earliest, most manageable stage.
“The PSA blood test is able to detect elevated levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA), which is a possible indicator of prostate cancer. A digital rectal exam can detect abnormalities on the prostate gland which may be a cause for concern. These screenings take only a few minutes,” said Bayhealth Cancer Nurse Navigator Paula Hess, MSN, RN, OCN.
To observe Prostate Cancer Awareness month in September, Bayhealth will provide free prostate cancer screenings. The screenings are available at no charge to men who are uninsured or underinsured (when insurance does not cover screenings). Registration is required at least one week in advance of the screenings. To find out more information or to register, please call (302) 430–5064 or (302) 744-6752.

Bayhealth’s Speech Pathology Department now offers a new, monthly support group for current and past patients with communication deficits.
The Communication Group is held at 4:30 p.m. the fourth Thursday every month in Kent General’s Rehab Conference Room in the Outpatient Rehabilitation Center, 560 S. Governors Avenue, Dover.
The Communication Group is an open forum to provide support and a safe environment for adults with acquired communication disorders. All community members, as well as their family and caregivers, who have residual speech and language deficits from a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or other progressive neurological diseases are welcome.
This support group focuses on improving communication through supported conversation. Unlike most support groups, there are not scheduled speakers or formal presentations; rather, the group is an open platform for participants to interact in conversations facilitated by Speech Language Pathologists to practice their communication strategies.
Each month has a theme that provides structure for the communication exchanges. Patients are also encouraged to bring props and souvenirs to help support their communication attempts in the group setting. Past themes have included travel, food, and hobbies.
Bayhealth’s supervising Speech Pathologists have noticed an increase in some patients’ ability to independently utilize their communication strategies. Others have shown an increase in effective social communication which can not always be appreciated in private therapy sessions. Thus far the group has met seven times and the Speech Pathology Department has received positive feedback from both patients and family members.
If you or a family member are interested in this free program, please contact Ashley Jones at 744-6371 or email Ashley at elizabeth_jones@bayhealth.org.

Want a healthy sensation? Try tobacco cessation!
Quitting smoking is about the best thing you can do for yourself and for your loved ones. Other forms of tobacco – such as chewing tobacco, cigars, snuff and pipes – are also harmful. In fact, one cigar has all the harmful effects of two packs of cigarettes. Smokeless tobacco has many of the same effects as cigarette, pipe and cigar smoking. Quitting the use of pipes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco decreases your risk of many different cancers. Here are just a few of the many reasons you should quit using tobacco:
-
Tobacco use may contribute to heart disease and cancer. It can also make you more prone to colds and breathing problems. Tobacco also increases your chances of developing mouth ulcers, cataracts and osteoporosis.
-
Smoking while pregnant or breastfeeding harms your baby. If you smoke while pregnant, your baby could face serious health problems, including premature birth, low birth weight and even death. If you smoke while breastfeeding, you are passing nicotine directly to your baby.
-
There is an increased incidence of oral cancer with chewing tobacco, pipe smoking, and dipping.
-
Tobacco use can also lead to mouth, throat, lung, and kidney cancer.
-
Second-hand smoke is harmful to others. Just breathing in the smoke from someone else’s cigarette can cause cancer and heighten the risk of heart disease and respiratory ailments like asthma and bronchitis. In children, second-hand smoke can cause Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and ear infections.
The benefits of quitting.
-
When you stop using tobacco products, you will see almost immediate benefits that will increase over time. For instance:
-
After 20 minutes – your blood pressure and heart rate drop to normal; temperature of hands and feet increase to normal
-
After 8 hours – the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal; oxygen level in your blood increases to normal
-
After 24 hours – your risk of heart attack decreases
-
After 48 hours – nerve endings begin to re-grow; senses of taste and smell improve
-
After 2 weeks to 3 months – circulation improves, walking is easier; lung function improves as much as 30%
-
After 1-9 months – coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath decrease; lungs are better able to handle mucus and fight infection
-
After 1 year – risk of coronary heart disease is cut in half
-
After 5 years – stroke risk is now the same as a nonsmoker
-
After 10 years – lung cancer death rate decreases by 50%; pre-cancerous cells are replaced; risk of cancer of mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney and pancreas decrease
-
After 15 years – risk of coronary heart disease is now the same as a non-smoker
