Help Us Prevent Stroke-Key Information for Your Health

Did you know that stroke kills twice as many women as breast cancer does?

A stroke can happen to anyone at any age. However, some groups have a higher risk. Your ethnic background and your sex (male or female) are examples of risk factors that you cannot control.

Women have more strokes than men, yet only 7 out of 10 women are aware of this. Women also suffer greater disability after stroke than men do.

A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is cut off. It can be caused by
by a blood clot blocking an artery or a blood vessel breaking.

If blood flow is cut off for longer than a few seconds, brain cells die because they cannot get oxygen.

Preventing Stroke

Have your blood pressure checked at least once a year. Avoid foods with lots of saturated fat, like fried foods or beef. If you have diabetes, make sure you are watching your sugar.

Warning Signs of Stroke

Responding to Stroke

It’s important to know what to do when stroke happens. A fast response is key to saving lives.

Remember to think FAST. Use FAST to decide whether someone is having a stroke:

F= Face    Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
A= Arms    Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S= Speech    Ask the person to say a simple phrase. Does the speech sound strange?
T= Time    If you observe any of these signs, it’s time to call 9-1-1.
