Bayhealth Opens New Operating Room

02.01.2013

Spacious OR 10 Provides Additional Capacity for Complex Surgeries

This spring, Bayhealth Kent General officials cut the ribbon on Operating Room 10, a 740 square foot space featuring cutting-edge technology in a room designed to accommodate the additional space that newer technology demands. “Operating Room 10 is big enough to accommodate an array of sophisticated state-of-the-art equipment that’s needed for complex neuro surgery, orthopaedic and spine procedures. This new room, planned with the demands oftechnology in mind, meets space capacity requirements for better maneuverability of the instrumentation and equipment required of these types of cases,” said Odasia Bennett, RN, ADN, a member of the Neuro team.

One such piece of equipment is a specialized Navigation system, in which the surgeon can reference ‘landmarks’ on a patient. Bayhealth Lead RN for Neuro/Spine Lisa Horn, BSN, RNFA, CNOR, further explains this technology.

“In neurosurgery and spine procedures, for example, specific landmarks are identified to pinpoint the site in a patient’s head for removing a brain tumor or when specific landmarks are needed to identify a site on the patient’s spine,” she said. “Another item is a specialty microscope specific to the magnification of the operative field to pinpoint key blood vessels and nerves in the brain. Neuromonitoring devices, also used in neuro, cardiac and spinal procedures, allow the entire surgical team to track nerve impulses and gauge the patient’s neurological condition during surgery for complex procedures.”

OR Nurse Manager Sue Lemmons, BSN, RN, MBA, CNOR, CNML, helped plan the specifics for the new room, making sure it includes specialized operating room lights to better illuminate the surgical site throughout the surgery, and eight wide screen TV monitors to provide greater visualization for the entire surgical team.

“Neurosurgery, spinal, and orthopaedic technology has evolved in just the past six or seven years. This larger operating room, as well as planning for future construction, will ensure our continued ability to accommodate the latest technological equipment that is the standard of care while enhancing the expertise of our surgeons and the entire operating team,” said Chris Price, MSN, RN, CPAN, CAPA, Bayhealth Director of PeriOperative Services.

Bayhealth is also contemplating adding more operating rooms. Due to the steadily rising volume of cases, the OR is typically at 85 percent capacity.

“We’ll continue to evolve and assess opportunities for growth so that our community receives the care that it deserves,” explained Price.
