Bayhealth Kent General Specialized Pharmacy Technician Dottie Collison, CPhT, was named Kent General’s 2012 Employee of the Fourth Quarter. The award honors Collison’s consistently outstanding performance and willingness to go beyond her job function to serve her department and the hospital.
Nominations highlighted Collison’s active involvement in implementing AcuDose-Rx, the automated medication dispensing system from McKesson, in the Kent, Milford, and Smyrna Emergency Departments. “She is the Acudose subject-matter expert in our department, and works closely with patient care services to respond to Acudose issues,” said Alex Zarow, RPh, MBA, Bayhealth Pharmacy Director.
Before joining Bayhealth in 1998 as a part-time pharmacy technician, Collison worked as a diamond consultant at Service Merchandise and Gordon’s Jewelers. She also managed a B. Dalton Bookseller branch in Dover. When the bookstore closed, Collison decided to enroll in Delaware Tech’s Certified Pharmacy Technician program.
“As soon as I got to Bayhealth, I knew this was the place for me,” Collison commented. In 2000, she secured a full-time role at Bayhealth Kent General. As the facility transitioned to new medication equipment, Collison trained on the system and soon served as a liaison between the pharmacy and nursing staff.
In addition to her duties in the Pharmacy Department, Collison serves on the Hazardous Waste Committee, Social Committee, Planetree Advisory Committee, and Planetree Cleanliness Task Force. She is the Pharmacy’s Department Safety Officer, as well.
Collison organizes the annual Pharmacy Week Banquet, held at the Sheraton Dover Hotel, an event that regularly sees attendance close to 100. Pharmacists and technicians throughout Delaware are invited to the banquet.
Two of Collison’s three children work at Bayhealth Kent General: Rachel Whitecomb, Health Information Coder, and Nathan Whitecomb, Constable. Collison has hopes that her other daughter will also choose a career in the healthcare field.
The Employee of the Quarter Award is designed to recognize outstanding service, teamwork, and commitment to patient care. Recipients are given a $100 gift card, a plaque to display in their offices, and use of a special parking space. These honorees automatically become finalists for Bayhealth’s Employee of the Year Award.
