Bayhealth Emphasizes Safety with Annual Award

04.09.2013

Patient safety is always top of mind at Bayhealth. From keeping hallways clean and clear in order to reduce the risk of falls, to implementing sophisticated technology that monitors medication use and distribution, the Bayhealth community is constantly working to make sure patients, staff, and visitors are safe on our campuses.

In honor of National Patient Safety Awareness Week, Bayhealth’s Clinical Safety Council awarded its 4th Annual Safety Excellence Award. Recognizing employees who go above and beyond to support our culture of safety, the award accompanies a week of celebration and education.

Louis Levenson, RPh, MAS, MSITS, Pharmacy Informatics Specialist, received the Bayhealth Milford Memorial award. Levenson works diligently behind the scenes to ensure that systems related to medication administration function smoothly.

Levenson has played a major role in updating and maintaining medication bar codes, implementing RX Auditor, developing the smart pump drug library, and building web-based forms for physicians in computerized order entry processes. His contributions create a safer environment for nurses and physicians, and thus for the patients they serve.

“Louis Levenson is an unsung hero when it comes to patient safety at Bayhealth,” said Ann Keane, MSN, MA, RN, NEA-BC, CCRN, Director of Patient Care Services. “This award acknowledges his significant contribution.”

Sandy Boyce, Security Officer, received the Bayhealth Kent General Award. Dedicated to upholding the highest level of safety standards for our patients, visitors, and staff, Boyce continually takes action to ensure that the physical environment is secure.

Boyce is visible throughout the hospital—cleaning up spills, offering guidance to guests, providing wheelchairs, and helping co-workers with heavy or unstable boxes. Her quiet, unassuming presence brings a sense of security to the Kent campus.

Nominations praised Sandy’s sense of responsibility and personal commitment. Fellow employees expressed gratitude for her attention to detail, compassion, and care.

Other Safety Excellence Award nominees included Melanie Malloy, ADN, CNOR; Robert McKennett, CRNA, MA, MSN, NEA-BC; Arinlynn Warner, ADN, RN; Aderricka Cobb, CNA; Mary Ellen Konrad, BSN, RN; Sarah Hall.

During Patient Safety Awareness Week, the Clinical Safety Council sponsors a number of activities including poster displays, lectures, and games to communicate the importance of a safety-focused culture.
