Bayhealth Recognizes Winners of Biggest Loser Challenge

04.15.2013

There’s nothing like celebrating success, and the finale for the 2013 Bayhealth Biggest Loser Challenge was no exception.

Three teams of contenders congratulated, cheered and applauded one another and the staff members from both Bayhealth’s Dover and Milford Lifestyles Fitness Centers during closing ceremonies held April 6 in Dover. There were a total of 129 participants between the two facilities, with more than 70 attending closing ceremonies.

And there was reason to cheer: During the 12-week competition which started Jan. 7 and ended March 30, competitors lost a total of 1,343.4 pounds.

From the Dover center, Toni Gillis and David Giglio were the top female and male winners, respectively, and in Milford Judy Emory won the challenge.

Winning in this challenge is based on percentage of body weight lost, plus compliance with other rules of the game, including regular participation and weekly weigh-ins.

Mr. Giglio, librarian at Dover Public Library, said the challenge was about more than just losing weight.

“I have lost weight before, but this was different, better, more of an opportunity. That’s why I joined this gym. There was the involvement of the staff, and I knew some of the other participants,” he said, adding that he enjoyed competing with friends and neighbors.

Mrs. Emory, a Milford High School teacher, participated in the Challenge last year, and was pleasantly surprised by her achievement this year.

As part of “the Morning Crew,” she said she enjoyed “the support of other contestants. I came every day, and it was great doing it with other people. We had good support from the staff. It’s a great staff, and they kept us going.”

Mrs. Emory said she found success in changing her diet plan, and she intends to find “a maintenance plan” in order to stay on track.

The winners earned prizes and some swag as well.

At the Finale, contestants were asked to offer feedback, and their comments praised the staff as “very motivating.”

During the 12-week program, participants worked with the center’s fitness coaches; participated in group functional training sessions, completed a daily workout of the day, kept a weekly food diary, participated in weekly weigh ins and tracked performance goals.

“The Biggest Loser Challenge gives a person the chance to make a major lifestyle change or to refocus on having a healthy lifestyle. Lifestyles Fitness Center starts the competition the first week of the New Year to encourage people to get back into a routine after the busy holiday season,” Minear said.

“We provide the help that members need to achieve results, including fitness assessments, customized programs, individualized attention, weekly weigh-ins and food diaries.”

Registered participants competed both individually and on a team.

“Placing members into groups gives a sense of belonging and motivates competitors not to let their teammates down. Each week there is an individual winner and team winner,” said Minear.

Minear said the Challenge was designed to help participants be successful.

“We have designed the program to be 12 weeks in length to encourage people to be consistent for three months. Fitness facilities everywhere see "New Year’s resolution people," who do not follow through after a few visits. We are trying to change that cycle by providing services that lead to a healthy lifestyle. We are trying to change that cycle by providing services that create results. Results that lead to a healthy lifestyle long term."
