Bayhealth nurse Kimberly Hollowell, RN, BSN, is the recipient of the Bayhealth Kent General DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Created by the family of Patrick Barnes to honor the nurses who cared for him and for his family during the last weeks of his life, the award is given by health systems nationwide to recognize the compassion and kindness that nurses offer patients every day.
Hollowell’s patients on the 1A medical-surgical unit praise her excellent bedside manner. They appreciate her kindness and her caring. One patient mentioned Hollowell’s commitment to pain management strategies.
“Kim completely changed my attitude in a positive way,” said another patient. “She even brought my appetite back!”
Hollowell joined Bayhealth in 2011 after graduating from Delaware State University’s nursing program. She is currently enrolled in Drexel University’s MSN in Nursing Education and Faculty Role program.
“This is the best first job I could ever hope for,” Hollowell enthused. “Everyone I work with is positive and supportive. We help each other and we work together to do the best for our patients.”
Hollowell thanked her preceptor, Rebecca Hutchinson, RN, BSN, who trained Hollowell when she first joined 1A. Hutchinson is a former DAISY Award winner.
“We are very lucky to have Kim as part of our nursing team,” said Bonnie Perratto, MSN, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive. “She makes a difference in our patients’ lives.”
Each DAISY Award winner receives a certificate, a DAISY Award pin, and a serpentine stone sculpture hand-carved by Shona artisans in Zimbabwe. The recipient’s unit displays the DAISY banner and enjoys baked goods provided by Food and Nutrition Services.
