Bayhealth Graduates First Emergency Department Fellows

07.22.2013

After 20 weeks of hands-on patient care, classroom time, and invaluable experiences in several departments in the hospital, Bayhealth’s first class of Emergency Department Fellows received their certificates.

We extend hearty congratulations to the following nurses:

Steven Biesterfeld, ADN, RN
Nichole Gallaher, ADN, RN
Chelsea Johnson, BSN, RN
Crisa Rawling, ADN, RN
Lydia Royer, BSN, RN
Brittany Schorr, BSN, RN
Brenda Shannon, ADN, RN

At the graduation ceremony, Patricia Fuller, MBA, MEd, RN, CEN, NE-BC, Director of Emergency and Trauma Services, praised the graduates’ dedication and formally welcomed them to the Emergency and Trauma team.

“As long as you’re a part of nursing, you need to have a desire to learn. You’ll continue to grow in your profession and learn more than you expect. This is a great team, and we are happy that you’re a part of it,” Fuller said.

The fellowship was the first time the students had encountered the variety of issues that bring people to the ED. Overseen and implemented by a group of preceptors, all experienced emergency nurses, the program combined patient care and classroom learning.

The preceptors shouldered much of the responsibility for developing the fellowship curriculum. Using content and educational standards from the Emergency Nurses Association, they built a systematic approach to the coursework using case studies, interventional activities, debriefing sessions, and practical application scenarios.

Although some of the new graduates expressed nervousness about tackling their new roles, Bayhealth leaders expressed encouragement.

“You’ll never be faulted for asking a question or asking for help. We are here to help make you better nurses. I know I speak for everyone when I say I’m excited to work with you,” said Bonnie Perratto, MSN, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive.

Fuller credited several people with bringing the fellowship program to fruition: Pete Zingone, ADN, RN, Kent ED Preceptor Committee Chair and the preceptor coordinators; Susan Ebaugh, MSN, APN, ACNS-BC, CEN, Kent Emergency Department Clinical Nurse Specialist; and Dennise Washington, MSN, APRN, ACNS-BC, CEN, Milford Emergency Department Clinical Nurse Specialist.

Each Emergency Department Fellowship class is designed to allow for unique dynamics and interaction. We expect to graduate the next group of fellows in Fall 2013.
