Bayhealth Emergency Department Joins 2013 DE Mud Run

10.15.2013

Last month, 24 staff members from the Bayhealth General Kent emergency department and Bayhealth Emergency Center, Smyrna, participated in the Delaware Mud Run as a way to honor Melissa Cobb-Brown, RN, an ED nurse who lost her life to breast cancer this summer.

Clothed in hot pink shorts, wigs, spandex, and shoes, the Bayhealth team tackled the 5K race course consisting of boot camp style obstacles surrounded by mud. Participants, called “mudders,” must crawl and slog their way through tunnels and pits as well as climb over wooden structures.

The Bayhealth mudders raised $780 for cancer research. Early in their fundraising, Dr. Praveen Mital, an emergency physician, challenged the group to reach $500 by promising to match their contribution and run the race in a bikini.

“The race was an amazing teambuilding experience,” said Dawn Culp, MSN, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P, FNE, DV & Gang Consultant. “We found a great sense of community in doing this event.”

True to his word, Dr. Mital donned a pink wig and matching bikini for the event.

Brown joined Bayhealth in 1999 as a clerk in the Bayhealth Kent General emergency department. Following a short stint at Bayhealth Milford Memorial, she earned her RN degree and returned to Kent General, where she ended her career.

Friends and colleagues have established a fund in Brown’s memory, the Melissa Cobb-Brown Foundation. Monies raised will assist in supporting her son, Philip.
