Four Bayhealth electricians recently joined the Boy Scouts. They’re not campers, but volunteers installing electrical panels on outbuildings at the new Akridge Scout Reservation and Council Service Area, tucked between Dover and Camden.

This 85-acre facility will be the Boy Scouts’ new home in Delaware and the headquarters of the Del-Mar-Va Council, which serves scouts in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. Now in phase II of construction, the facility contains a nature lodge and three open-air pavilions, used for dining, activities, and other gatherings.

The electrical panels will provide the pavilions with lighting and receptacles, eliminating the need for power cords and generators. This month, one of the pavilions will be transformed into an amateur radio station for the Fall Boy Scout Camporee, an event drawing hundreds of scouts and adult leaders.

Currently, the Rodney Reservation, in Northeast, MD, and the Henson Scout Reservation, in Rhodesdale, MD, serve upwards of 6,000 campers per year. The Akridge Reservation will offer a variety of summer camps, outdoor education events, and training programs for the Boy Scouts and community organizations.

“We want to partner with the community as much as possible,” said Travis McCormick, Del-Mar-Va Council Program Director for Area 2. “We’ve already brought lots of people out here, and we’re excited to share the space and involve others in our programming.”

As an Eagle Scout who worked at Henson Reservation in the 1970s, Andy Strouse, Bayhealth Plant Operations Supervisor, was thrilled when he was approached about volunteering his electrical skills for this project. Strouse organized a crew of four electricians to tackle the pavilion job.

“This is a wonderful chance for us to work together with a great community partner,” said Strouse. “I know this facility will make a huge impact on the Boy Scouts and on the Dover area.”
