Pharmacy Week Event Highlights Accomplishments

12.02.2013

Bayhealth recently sponsored the seventh annual Pharmacy Week Dinner and Lecture, an event welcoming all Delaware pharmacists and technicians.

Over 70 practitioners from throughout Delaware gathered to celebrate a proclamation from Gov. Jack Markell recognizing the valuable services of the pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who work in in-patient, outpatient, homecare, and long-term care settings.

Held at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino, the educational evening featured a keynote address from Nancy Dawson, MD, director of the Genito-urinary Oncology Program at Georgetown University Hospital’s Lombardo Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Dawson’s talk was titled “Prevention of Skeletal-Related Events: Clinical Data and Dosing Considerations.”

Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians play a vital role in patient care. The evolution of the practice of pharmacy has been especially dramatic in recent years as pharmacy staff have moved beyond compounding and dispensing medications to become vital members of interdisciplinary patient-care teams.

Many people may not know that pharmacists help prevent medication errors, advise doctors and other prescribers on the best drug choices, and work directly with patients to ensure they use their medications safely and effectively.

Hospital and health system pharmacists have been able to take on enhanced patient-care roles because of a number of factors, including the deployment of highly trained, certified technicians and new technologies like robotics that dispense medications.

Pharmacists are experts on the thousands of medications available today, how each one works in the body, and the ways to use each one safely and effectively.

Bayhealth offers a Pharmacy Practice Residency Program designed to provide opportunities for a highly-motivated pharmacist to achieve an advanced level of practical training and experience in evidence based medicine. Residents who complete the program are able to solve complex medication-related problems. For more information, visit bayhealth.org or call 302-744-7021.
