Terry Towne, MSN, RN-BC, NE-BC, lead advisor for Post 804, and Benjamin Kolmer, district executive for the Del-Mar-Va Council, display the scrub top that students in the program may earn.
Each month during the school year, over 50 members of the Boy Scouts meet at Bayhealth Kent General for an insider’s view into the health care field. The Explorers are a part of the Del-Mar-Va Council, managed by the Boy Scouts of America.
The ongoing partnership between Bayhealth and the Del-Mar-Va Council provides an Explorer’s Post at the hospital. Students aged 14-20 have the chance to learn from nurses, physicians, directors, and other health care professionals.
“Students learn about departments and career paths they may never have considered. Everyone there, even the employees, learns something new,” said Terry Towne, MSN, RN-BC, NE-BC, clinical educator in Bayhealth’s Education Department.
The post held its annual open house in October. The event highlighted various departments and services throughout the hospital.
November’s meeting introduced the Explorers to RIVA, a robotic automated pharmacy system. RIVA prepares IV syringes and bags in accurate doses for patients. It reduces the risk of error.
RIVA allows pharmacists to customize medication doses and prepare them as needed rather than mixing by hand.
During the December meeting, Explorers learned about diagnostic imaging (for example, CT, MRI, x-ray) and toured the imaging area in the hospital.
A variety of employees and physicians in each functional area participate in the conversation. Students gain an understanding of how each role contributes to patient care.
Bayhealth recently renewed its charter with the Del-Mar-Va Council for the 2014 year. Upcoming sessions for Explorers will focus on operating rooms, wound care, neurosurgery, and SleepCare Centers.
Meetings take place on the second Wednesday of each month during the school year from 6:00—8:00 p.m.
