Bayhealth Director of PeriOperative Services Chris Price, MSN, RN, CPAN, CAPA, of Townsend, Del., was invited to be a key note speaker, representing the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) at an annual PeriAnesthesia Conference held in Hamilton, in New Zealand this past fall.
Price presented at three informational breakout sessions: “History: My Journey,” “Advanced Roles in Peri Anesthesia Domain,” and “Changing the PACU Nurse’s Future.” When reviewing practice in the United States, Price shared information related to her own progression as a PeriAnesthesia nurse with an audience of nurses and physicians from New Zealand and Australia.
She presented the variety of roles nurses have in the U.S. as clinicians, educators, and managers, as well as key points from the Institute of Medicine/Robert Wood Johnson’s Report on “The Future of Nursing.” She stressed the importance of specialty certification, and a commitment to life-long learning. Among the goals in the United States shared are key educational concepts that registered nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and specialty. She shared that acute care facilities, academic facilities, and Boards of Nursing are working together throughout the country to meet a specific recommendation that by 2020, 80% of registered nurses should have minimum of a bachelor’s degree (BSN) in nursing. The report also recommends that nursing double its number of doctoral prepared nurses by the same year.
“More and more nurses are furthering their education by pursuing master’s degrees and many are also studying for their doctorates,” she said.
A member of ASPAN since 1987, Price served as ASPAN’s President from 2011 to 2012, and also served as Vice-President-President Elect, Director for Region Five, and as Chair of the Council of Component Presidents. ASPAN represents the interests of over 55,000 nurses who practice in pre-anesthesia and post-anesthesia care, outpatient surgery, and pain management settings. Its mission includes providing members with the latest in PeriAnesthesia education, research, standards, networking and advocacy.
At Bayhealth, Price is responsible for operations, education and management of the operating rooms, the cardiovascular operating room, the Cystoscopy and Endoscopy suites, Day Surgery and Pre-Admission Testing, and the Post Anesthesia Units at both Kent General and Milford Memorial.
