Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative
3/4/2014 2:17:59 PM

The World Health Organization/UNICEF Baby-Friendly® Hospital Initiative (BFHI)

Bayhealth is working towards designation as a Baby Friendly Hospital. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) was launched by WHO and UNICEF as a global effort to implement practices that protect, promote and support breastfeeding.
The guidelines for reaching this achievement include educating clinical nursing instructors or educators. Clinical educators, staff nurses, and physicians can complete the training for free by visiting Wellstart Internationalwww.wellstart.org.
At this time, it is optional for clinical instructors on critical care, med/surg, or emergency services units. However, Maternal/Child clinical instructors must show they have current, research based knowledge in the area and the 3 hour course provided by Wellstart International meets the criteria needed. If an instructor has completed the education for another Baby-Friendly Hospital, they do not need to redo the course. The instructor only needs to provide a copy of their certificate of completion.
Certificates of completion must be sent to CeAnn Williams at Bayhealth’s Education Department (640 S. State St. Dover, DE 19901). Certificates of completion can also be sent via fax (302-730-3047) or email (CeAnn_Williams@bayhealth.org).
Please feel free to contact CeAnn Williams at 302-744-6722 if you have any questions. Thank you for supporting Bayhealth in this initiative.

UPDATE: Flu Vaccination
9/30/2013 10:39:38 AM
Effective immediately, all students/faculty completing an externship or observation at a Bayhealth facility must provide verification of receiving the flu vaccine. Bayhealth will no longer provide free flu vaccines. The cost will be $26.00/person.
The school will need to send a list of students/instructors who have received the flu shot at Bayhealth’s Occupational Health, received the vaccine at a location other than Occupational Health, and those who have declined the vaccine.  The list of students and instructors needs to:
  • Be on letterhead with a signature of confirmation
  • Include the first and last name
  • Date of birth
  • Date and location of where the student/instructor received the vaccine
  • Signature by school designee attesting that proof was shown by the student/faculty
Students/faculty identified as still needing the flu shot can obtain the vaccine by:
  • Coming to Bayhealth’s Occupational Health, making payment and receiving the flu shot.
  • Receiving the flu shot elsewhere and provide documentation to CeAnn Williams - Bayhealth Student Coordinator, that you have received the flu shot.
  • Calling Gayle Myran at Occupational Health, 302-678-1303, to schedule a large group or to pay for the flu shots and administer the flu shots at the school.
Any person who declines the flu shot will be listed in the letter as a declination and will be required to wear a mask in the clinical setting.  Public Health will determine the start date for when masks will need to be worn.  Those who have received a vaccine will have a sticker placed on their badge.

Hand Hygiene - Artificial Nails and Extenders
8/12/2013 3:25:35 PM

Hand Hygiene - Artificial Nails and Extenders

According to Bayhealth Hand Hygiene Policy, B6030.03; hand hygiene is the single most important procedure for prevention of healthcare-associated infections.

In addition to handwashing and using alcohol-based hand rubs, other aspects of hand hygiene are critical.

Persons having direct contact with patients are NOT to wear artificial fingernails or extenders. Fingernail extensions or tips, gels, and acrylic overlays, resin wraps or acrylic fingernails constitute types of artificial fingernails.

The rule of thumb is if the product cannot be immediately removed with nail polish remover, then it is considered a nail enhancement. Gels and shellac (which is a combination of gel and regular nail polish) have to be soaked off of the nails.

Natural tips are to be kept less than ¼ inch long. Chipped nail polish is not acceptable.

For more details, please see the policy on BayNet or contact Paula Bodner, MSN, RN-BC – Education Department.
