Hand Hygiene - Artificial Nails and Extenders

According to Bayhealth Hand Hygiene Policy, B6030.03; hand hygiene is the single most important procedure for prevention of healthcare-associated infections.

In addition to handwashing and using alcohol-based hand rubs, other aspects of hand hygiene are critical.

Persons having direct contact with patients are NOT to wear artificial fingernails or extenders. Fingernail extensions or tips, gels, and acrylic overlays, resin wraps or acrylic fingernails constitute types of artificial fingernails.

The rule of thumb is if the product cannot be immediately removed with nail polish remover, then it is considered a nail enhancement. Gels and shellac (which is a combination of gel and regular nail polish) have to be soaked off of the nails.

Natural tips are to be kept less than ¼ inch long. Chipped nail polish is not acceptable.

For more details, please see the policy on BayNet or contact Paula Bodner, MSN, RN-BC – Education Department.
