Thoracic Surgery with da Vinci Robotics
With the arrival of da Vinci Robotic Surgery in Delaware, thoracic surgery patients may experience less pain, shorter recovery times and better long-term health outcomes.
Bayhealth’s da Vinci® Si™Surgical System Robot helps specially trained Bayhealth surgeons to make pinpoint incisions. Da Vinci Robotics allows the surgeon to view and magnify the smallest detail through a 3D high-definition TV screen.
Hope for Lung Cancer Patients
Thoracic surgery through da Vinci Robotics may mean better outcomes for lung cancer patients. Delaware has one of the highest lung cancer rates in the nation.
These lung cancers are typically treated with a lobectomy in which a portion of the lung and the lymph nodes are removed. In a traditional ‘open surgery,’ a surgeon makes a six to eight inch incision through the patient’s back and spreads the ribs back to reach the cancer. This type of surgery usually requires a five day hospitalization and several weeks for a full recovery.
The Benefits of da Vinci Robotics
By contrast, a da Vinci Robotic Surgery involves four small incisions of less than one centimeter with a fifth incision of approximately one to two inches to extract the tumor without the need to spread the ribs.
Not only do the smaller incisions help Bayhealth surgeons to more easily access and resect the tumor, they’ll also be able to remove the lymph nodes to properly stage patients for lifesaving treatment following surgery.
