Resident Biographies - Julie Gibbons
My name is Julie Gibbons and I am from Baltimore, Maryland. I graduated with honors from Notre Dame of Maryland University School of Pharmacy in 2013 and received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. I am entering the PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Bayhealth Medical Center in Dover, Delaware. Prior to pharmacy school I worked at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland as a pharmacy technician and continued on throughout school as an intern. While I gained experience with cartfill, Pyxis® and non-sterile the compounding, the bulk of my time was spent preparing IV admixtures. I was responsible for preparing and delivering patient specific doses, batching and TPNs.
While on rotation I had multiple opportunities to deliver presentations to peers and colleagues. Some topics of note include Glanzmann Thrombasthenia, the pharmacist’s role in bleeding prevention with new oral anticoagulants and dose standardization of oral medications for pediatrics. These topics serve to highlight my professional interests including internal medicine, pediatrics, anticoagulation and outcomes research.
Throughout pharmacy school I partnered with our charity, The Esperanza Center, and was appointed group leader and liaison. As a group, we focused on making patient education materials for a low health literacy Spanish speaking population. This even included writing and directing a telenovela focusing on medication safety to be shown in the office waiting room.
In my free time I enjoy baking, practicing yoga, curling up with a good book and cheering on the Baltimore Ravens. My goals upon completion of residency include pursing a specialty residency and obtaining a clinical career allowing me to interact with patients and mentor future pharmacists. I am grateful for the continued support of my family, friends and mentors.
