Program Description

The Bayhealth Pharmacy Practice Residency Program is a one-year training program in a diverse healthcare practice setting. The program is designed to provide the necessary opportunities for a highly motivated pharmacist to achieve an advance level of practical training and experience in evidence based medicine to solve complex medication-related problems present in healthcare today.

Residents will participate in all aspects of our comprehensive pharmacy service. Rotations are designed to integrate acute care, ambulatory care, pharmaceutical care, clinical practice, practice management, medication use evaluation, drug information, medication use policy development, education and other issues in pharmacy services. As a vital member of the healthcare team, the resident will be offered the opportunity to enhance his/her knowledge, attitude and skills needed to evaluate drug therapy for optimal patient outcomes.  The resident will be able to demonstrate effective organizational and integrative skills.  The resident will evaluate skills that assist in developing cost effective, quality clinical services.

The knowledge gained over the course of the program will provide opportunity for the resident to apply research skills aimed at identifying strategies for optimal patient drug use and clinical evaluation of medication therapies. Hence, the resident is expected to conduct a research project and prepare two presentations. The resident will demonstrate the ability to initiate, create and implement a health care plan to foster the goal of an interdisciplinary team.

The resident will acquire the foundation skills needed to become an effective leader and demonstrate commitment to the profession, which will allow them to be competent and confident practitioners.

Bayhealth Medical center pharmacy started its pharmacy practice residency program in 2003. The program received ASHP accreditation in March 2005.
