Bayhealth History

 

Bayhealth Kent General

  • In 1921, Drs. Joseph McDaniel and I.J. MacCollum addressed Dover's Rotary Club about the need for a hospital in Dover. Rotarians and local leaders launched a community fund drive.
  • In 1925, a site was selected and secured, and Kent General Hospital was incorporated.
  • In 1927, Kent General Hospital opened.
  • By 1937, annual admissions had doubled and the need for more space was apparent.
  • In 1942, the third floor was enlarged.
  • In 1951, a major addition brought the total number of patient beds to 93.
  • In 1972 another expansion upgraded outpatient services and expanded emergency services.
  • In 1995, Kent General unveiled a new Outpatient Rehabilitation Center and a Women's Center.
  • In 1996, the Outpatient Services Center opened on the southwest corner of the hospital.
  • In August 2003, construction began on a three-floor expansion to upgrade neonatal intensive care services, increase delivery room capacity and provide antepartum/GYN beds in one centralized location.
  • In September 2003, an affiliation agreement was signed with the University of Pennsylvania Health System to provide cardiac surgery services at Kent General Hospital.
  • In September 2004 the first cardiac surgery was performed at Kent General Hospital.
  • In 2006, the two-story Center for Women and Infants opens.
  • In 2008, Bayhealth founded the Bayhealth Cancer Institute.
  • In 2008, a clinical affiliation agreement was signed with the University of Pennsylvania Health System, making Bayhealth a member of the Penn Cancer Network. This agreement provides expanded cancer diagnosis, treatment, research and education to Delaware residents.
  • In July 2008, we broke ground on Phase II, the largest building project in our history – a $168 million, 400,000 square foot expansion at Kent General that will double the size of our Emergency Department and include an integrated Cancer Center, Welcome Center and a 375 car parking garage.
  • In 2008, the Retail Stores at Bayhealth were unveiled and a new Ambulatory Pharmacy and Wound Care Center opened. Perinatology services also became available for the first time at Bayhealth.
  • In February 2012, the new Integrated Cancer Center and Emergency and Trauma Services began treating patients.

Bayhealth Milford Memorial

  • Founded by Mary Louise Donnell Marshall, who began her efforts to construct a hospital in 1907.
  • During the 1912-13 General Assembly of Delaware, House Bill 194 authorized the establishment of the 12-bed Milford Emergency Hospital in downtown Milford.
  • In the mid-1930's, a fund drive was started.
  • In 1938, a new 100-bed hospital, renamed Milford Memorial Hospital, opened.
  • In 1954, a four-story clinical addition was constructed at and a separate three-story building was built to house a school of nursing and provide housing for nursing students. 
  • In 1991, the new Outpatient Services facility and new Surgical Department opened. 
  • In 1992, the 32,000-square foot Inpatient Rehabilitation Center and Physical Therapy opened. 
  • In January 2002, the 12,000-square foot Cancer Center opened, adding radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery services previously unavailable in Milford.
  • In 2004, construction was completed that enlarged Emergency and Trauma Services and enhanced Diagnostic Imaging.
  • In 2005, the History Wall and Tree of Life are dedicated at Milford Memorial. 
  • In 2006, the Total Joint Center opens.
  • In 2008, Bayhealth founded the Bayhealth Cancer Institute.

  • In 2014, Bayhealth announced plans to build a state-of-the-art health campus in Milford. Opening in 2018, it will include an inpatient hospital, emergency department and vast outpatient services.
