Interventional Cardiology Services

If interventional cardiology services are required, an interventional cardiac catheterization can be performed in Bayhealth’s Cardiac Catheterization Suite.

If there are blockages, the doctor can use the catheter to complete a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), opening the blockage and restoring normal blood flow.  These procedures may be performed separately, or in combination.

The three common types of PCI are:

  • Angioplasty – the doctor will attach a small balloon to the catheter, which is guided into the artery and inflated, causing the plaque to press against the artery wall and ease blood flow.
  • Coronary Stenting – a small wire tube called a stent is inserted into the artery to hold it open.  This procedure is generally done after the angioplasty has compressed the plaque against the artery wall to make reclosure of the artery less likely.
  • Coronary Atherectomy – a spinning blade or laser is attached to the catheter and is used to remove fat and calcium buildup.
