All surgical services are provided onsite at Kent General Hospital, eliminating long-distance travel time for patients and their families. After surgery, patients recover in one of the private rooms in our beautiful Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
Surgical services include:
- Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) – using a blood vessel from another part of the body to bypass part of a coronary artery that is narrowed or blocked. Blood goes through the new blood vessel, avoiding the blocked artery, and improves blood flow to the heart.
- Valve replacement and repair – depending on how damaged the valve is, the doctor may recommend either replacing or repairing the valve. In heart valve repair, the valve is reshaped, supported around its base and attached to nearby heart tissues. In heart valve replacement, the damaged valve is removed and replaced with a synthetic valve.
- Maze procedure – performed to correct chronic atrial fibrillation
- Closure of atrial septal defects and patent foramen ovale in adults. Closure of these defects may prevent clot formation leading to stroke.
Cardiovascular surgical services may include any combination of procedures performed on the heart and its blood supply to improve the performance of the heart and quality of life for our community members. Our commitment to quality involves a team of healthcare providers including our surgeons, nurses, clinical specialists, nurse managers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, discharge care managers, educators, and nutritionists to provide the highest holistic quality of care for our patients in the hospital and at discharge.
