Health Tip: Don't Breathe Outdoor Smoke

(HealthDay News) -- When debris is being burned outdoors, the smoke can be harmful if inhaled.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists these guidelines to help protect yourself from debris smoke:

  • If you are at a high risk of complications from breathing the smoke, avoid exposure.

  • Try to avoid exposure to smoke both indoors and outdoors.

  • Close your windows and stay inside, running the air conditioner.

  • Don't engage in activities that strain your lungs and heart, including exercise or chores, either outside or inside your home.

  • Stick to your medication regimen as prescribed by your doctor; contact your doctor if your health worsens.

  • Remember that wearing a dust mask, wet cloth or bandana will not protect you from smoke.
