CASANTHRANOL; DOCUSATE SODIUM was a laxative and stool softener combination. This drug was used to help prevent constipation and straining or discomfort associated with hard or dry stools. This laxative will usually had effect within 6—12 hours. Generic casanthranol; docusate sodium capsules were available.
NOTE: This drug is discontinued in the United States.
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
rectal tears or fissures
an unusual reaction to casanthranol, docusate sodium, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
pregnant or trying to get pregnant
Take casanthranol; docusate capsules by mouth. Follow the directions on the label. Swallow the capsules with a drink of water. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses. Do not take regularly for more than one week without advice of your health care professional.
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
Do not use for more than one week without advice from your prescriber or health care professional. Long-term use can make your body depend on the laxative for regular bowel movements. If your constipation keeps returning, check with your prescriber or health care professional. If you get diarrhea which continues or is severe, discontinue the laxative.
Always drink plenty of water while taking laxatives or a stool softener, to help fight constipation.
Serious reactions to this drug are unlikely. Call your prescriber or health care professional if you have any unexplained effects.
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.
Store at room temperature, at or below 30 degrees C (86 degrees F). Do not freeze. Protect from moisture. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

Take casanthranol; docusate sodium oral solution or syrup by mouth. Follow the directions on the label. Shake well before using. Use a specially marked spoon or container to measure your medicine. Ask your pharmacist if you do not have one; household spoons are not always accurate. Dilute the measured dose in 6 to 8 ounces of milk, fruit juice or infant's formula prior to drinking to prevent throat irritation. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.
