Some people use statistics to try to figure out their chances of getting cancer or of being cured. It is important to remember that these numbers relate to large groups of people. No two people are alike. This information can't be used to predict what will happen to you or your child.
These statistics are from the American Cancer Society about the Ewing family of tumors (EFT):
About 1 percent of all childhood tumors are in the EFT.
About 225 children and adolescents are diagnosed with an Ewing tumor in North America each year.
EFT mostly affects white people, both Hispanic and non-Hispanic. This disease is rare in other racial groups.
Males are somewhat more likely than females to get Ewing tumor.
The overall 5-year survival rate for a person with a localized Ewing tumor is around 70 percent.
If the cancer has spread at the time of diagnosis, the 5-year survival rate is about 15 to 30 percent.
