Motivational Enhancement Therapy

Motivational enhancement therapy is a type of treatment for alcohol or drug abuse problems. It helps people to use their own motivation to stop using drugs or alcohol. They can then make changes that will lead to a more healthy lifestyle.

This type of therapy may be part of inpatient or outpatient treatment for drug or alcohol abuse. It can help a person stay sober. It is a brief therapy. It lasts only 1 to 2 hours over 2 to 4 sessions. It may be used along with other types of counseling. With a counselor's help, the person creates a personal plan and sets goals. The counselor helps the person see the behaviors that lead to drug or alcohol use problems. The idea behind this kind of therapy is that a person will be more able to make changes if he or she is able to personally set the goals for changing those behaviors.
