Bayhealth Honors Its Volunteers

04.24.2012

They hold the hand of frightened patients during their most difficult hour.  They offer good cheer and words of comfort.  And they remain staunch advocates for both patients and their families.  Health care volunteers are making a difference each day.

Last week, Bayhealth provided appreciation breakfasts for its volunteers at both Bayhealth Kent General Hospital and Bayhealth Milford Memorial.

“Our volunteers truly make a difference for patients, patients’ families and the community.  While volunteers do not get compensated, their value to us cannot be measured,” said Bayhealth Volunteer Services Senior Manager Terry Schrenker, who notes that more than 400 adult volunteers and 120 student volunteers served more than 79,000 man-hours in 2011.  According to Schrenker, volunteers serve in a wide variety of roles running the gamut from Patient Escort, to Surgical Waiting Room volunteers who serve as a liaison between families and the Day Surgery staff.

During the Volunteer Appreciation Breakfasts, Bayhealth honored the President’s Volunteer Service Silver Award volunteers who served between 250 to 499 hours and Gold Award volunteers who served 500 or more hours last year.  The President’s Call To Service Award recognizes volunteers who have served more than 4,000 hours lifetime.  The Physicians’ Appreciation Award honored the two volunteers who served the most hours in 2011.

If you’d like to make a difference by serving as a volunteer, please call Bayhealth Volunteer Services at (302) 744-7153 or (302) 430-5621.
