The Weight Is Over

Dover, Delaware – What’s the secret to losing more than four tons of weight? Just ask the 194 Bayhealth weight loss surgery patients who have collectively lost more than 9,000 pounds since the Bayhealth Bariatric Surgery Program began in October, 2010!

“For our weight loss surgery patients, this is more than a cosmetic issue of ‘looking good.’ This is a quality of life issue for morbidly obese patients who cannot play with their children or may not have the opportunity to see their kids grow up,” said Bayhealth Bariatrics Program Coordinator Mildred Steele, RN, MSN.

According to Steele, patients who are morbidly obese are far more at risk for hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and a host of other serious health issues. LAP Band surgery, combined with diet and exercise, has helped many morbidly obese patients get their life back.

Laparoscopic gastric banding surgery, otherwise known as the LAP-Band System, ™ is a minimally invasive procedure in which a bariatric surgeon inserts an adjustable silicone ring that is placed like a belt around the upper part of the stomach. The ring creates a new, small, upper stomach pouch which carries a smaller amount of food and allows the patient to “feel full” sooner and “stay full” longer. By consuming fewer calories, the patient loses weight.

The laparoscopic surgery is far less invasive than traditional surgery, involving four incisions which are each a quarter inch in diameter and a fifth incision less than half an inch in diameter. The scarring is minimal, patients return home the same day, and can typically return to normal activities in only seven days. Nationally, the major complications rate is less than one-fifth of one percent. To qualify for LAP Band surgery, you must meet the following criteria:

• You must be 18 years of age.
• You must have a BMI of 40 or BMI of 35 with one or more serious health condition or be at least 100 pounds overweight.
• You have been overweight for more than 5 years with documentation of previous weight loss attempts.
