Dear Sussex County friends and neighbors,
Being part of this community is undoubtedly one of our greatest achievements at Bayhealth since we first began serving this beautiful community many decades ago. At Bayhealth we are driven to strengthen the health of central and southern Delaware, one life at a time. It is through our deeply held commitment to each of you and your families that we recently received a very prestigious honor of being named a Top Hospital in the United States, which includes achieving a Safety Grade A.
It only seems fitting to share this remarkable news with you as we celebrate the two-year anniversary of opening the state-of-art Sussex Campus on Route 1 not far from your home. Bayhealth is one of only 105 hospitals in the U.S. to receive this designation and the only hospital in the state of Delaware to receive this honor. We couldn’t be prouder, and we want to celebrate this achievement with you, our friends, donors and neighbors.
"Today, as we mark this milestone and impressive achievement, we remain focused on the healthcare needs of our communities across Kent and Sussex counties."
When we opened the Sussex Campus two years ago, we were filled with hope and excitement for the future of healthcare in southern Delaware. Today, as we mark this milestone and impressive achievement, we remain focused on the healthcare needs of our communities across Kent and Sussex counties.
As our region’s healthcare leader, Bayhealth is finding new, innovative ways to advance healthcare services and to bring the brightest, next generation of doctors, nurses and healthcare workers to this community.
- More than 20 new physicians will join Bayhealth in just a few months as part of our community’s first ever Graduate Medical Education (GME) program. Bayhealth is bringing this unprecedented program to help train and attract physicians from across the country.
- New family medicine, primary care and specialty care practices are already underway throughout the region with the planned addition of a new GME practice in Milford, a new emergency and walk-in facility with primary and specialty services off Route 9 strategically placed for easy access to residents in nearby towns and additional future plans for more facilities in the years ahead.
- Bayhealth began expanding the fifth floor of our Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus with 24 more patient beds and the third floor to include five more women’s services beds and a surgical suite. This expansion will help meet the growing community needs for years to come.
On behalf of the more than 4,500 physicians and caregivers at Bayhealth, it is our honor to be part of this community. Thank you for allowing us to serve you and your family and thank you for helping make Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus one of our nation’s Top Hospitals.

About the Top Hospital Distinction
To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety, and achieve top performance in its category. To see the full list of institutions honored as 2020 Top Hospitals, visit LeapfrogGroup.org/TopHospitals.
Founded in 2000 by large employers and other purchasers, The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization driving a movement for giant leaps forward in the quality and safety of American health care. The flagship Leapfrog Hospital Survey collects and transparently reports hospital performance, empowering purchasers to find the highest-value care and giving consumers the lifesaving information, they need to make informed decisions. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, Leapfrog’s other main initiative, assigns letter grades to hospitals based on their record of patient safety, helping consumers protect themselves and their families from errors, injuries, accidents and infections.
