Jasmine Rivers, RRT-NPS receiving Preceptor of the Year for the Respiratory Care Program award

Bayhealth Respiratory Therapist Receives Teaching Award

For the third year in a row, a Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus respiratory therapist has been named the Preceptor of the Year for the Respiratory Care Program held through Delaware Tech and Christiana Care Services. This year’s honoree is Jasmine Rivers, RRT-NPS.

The award was chosen by students in the program after completing rotations at four different healthcare facilities, including Bayhealth. The clinical rotation lasted a year and provided students an opportunity to practice their skills and work side-by-side with professionals in the field. Being able to work with a preceptor is a vital part of education, Rivers said. It allows students to make sense of what they’ve read in books and learned in class, and see what working in respiratory care is really like. “I remember when I was a student, I had a hard time with my clinicals and the preceptors. Knowing I was able to help them learn without having to go through what I did makes me happy,” Rivers said. “It makes me proud to know I was able to make a difference.”

Respiratory therapists are experts in airway management and work with patients to improve their quality of respiratory care. Rivers has been a respiratory therapist for three years after deciding she wanted to work in the medical field but didn’t necessarily want to care for the patient as a whole. “I wanted a career in a more focused area and the lungs are pretty important for a patient’s health,” Rivers said. “I’m driven by the opportunity to make a difference in their lives. I always look at patients like their myself or a family member, and treat them how I would want to be treated. I see them as people and not as patients.”

Respiratory Care has locations at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus and Bayhealth Milford Memorial. Along with having a team of therapists on hand to improve lung health, a Better Breathers Support Group is available for community members and family members with lung disease.
