Bayhealth Labs Achieve CAP Accreditation

Thursday, November 1, 2018 |

Bayhealth is proud to announce that the laboratory and pathology services have been awarded full accreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). This accreditation includes the lab and pathology services at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus; Bayhealth Milford Memorial; and Bayhealth Emergency Center, Smyrna.

“CAP accreditation is an extremely important achievement for Bayhealth as well as for our patients and our community,” said Vice President of Ancillary and Clinical Services Brad D. Kirkes, FACHE. “The community can be assured that the laboratory and pathology services provided at our facilities have undergone an intense, thorough inspection, and have been determined to meet or exceed the most stringent quality and safety requirements available.”

The goal of the CAP program is to improve patient safety by advancing the quality of pathology and laboratory services through education and rigorous standards. This accreditation is considered the gold standard for laboratories. The U.S. federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, which began in the early 1960s, as being equal to or more rigorous than the government’s own inspection program.

Senior Director of Laboratory Services Chris Dukes, BSMT(ASCP), MBA, says receiving this accreditation has been part of the Lab’s overall strategic goal for several years, and validates the planning and intense work by laboratory and pathology leadership. With this achievement, Bayhealth joins approximately 83 percent of the top academic medical centers and large hospitals. Through the accreditation process, inspectors examined the lab and pathology records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examined staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management.

“This transition from Joint Commission to CAP has been intense, but also incredibly validating to have the highest authority in laboratory accreditation recognize the quality of the work that we do at Bayhealth,” said Laboratory Services Assistant Medical Director Naili Ma, MD.
