PACU Nurse Receives Esteemed DAISY Award

Tuesday, October 30, 2018 |
Sometimes it’s the simple things that mean the most to patients – a wet cloth, help with chapstick, and a drink. These kind gestures didn’t go unnoticed when Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus Post-Anesthesia Care Unit Nurse Michelle Maxton, RN, cared for a patient recently. It’s these actions that led Maxton to be named Bayhealth’s most recent DAISY Award honoree.

The DAISY Award is given by the DAISY Foundation, which was formed in 2000 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. The Barnes family wanted to recognize the nurses who cared for Patrick and all the other “unsung heroes” of the nursing profession.

Maxton was nominated by the daughter of a woman who had surgery at Bayhealth earlier this year. The patient had experienced a long weekend at the hospital awaiting surgery, and Maxton did everything in her power to not only make the woman comfortable but her daughters as well. All of this helped make the patient physically and emotionally feel better. And then when it was time to take the patient up to her room, Maxton transferred the patient to her new room. “Michelle was one of the most attentive nurses ever,” the daughter wrote in the nomination. “She was absolutely amazing, and Bayhealth is incredibly blessed to have her on their team.”

For Maxton, she just wanted to ease the anxiety of the patient, and was overwhelmed with gratitude toward the patient and her family for nominating her for the DAISY Award. “She had gone through a lot during the day, and I just wanted to put her mind at ease through simple care and compassion,” Maxton said. “I’m happy to know that I helped this family as a whole in some way during their experience here at Bayhealth. I love caring for people and wish to continue doing this passion for many years to come.”

DAISY Award honorees are chosen by nurses, administrators, peers, physicians, volunteers, patients, and family. If you know a Bayhealth nurse who deserves to be nominated, visit Bayhealth.org/Daisy and fill out the nomination form.
