Bayhealth Adds Lung and Colorectal Cancer Nurse Navigator Position

Thursday, September 27, 2018 | Cancer Care
The Bayhealth Cancer Institute is excited to announce the addition of a nurse navigator specific to lung and colorectal cancers. This new position was created in partnership with the state of Delaware and in response to evidence showing these two patient populations would benefit from a dedicated resource focused on improving screening rates and educating our local communities.

According to incidence and mortality rates in Delaware, there is much work to be done with lung cancer and colorectal cancer. “Increasing awareness, early detection, and screening rates, and decreasing late stage incidence will provide a tremendous opportunity for those in our community to change the way they think about and view their health,” said Bayhealth Cancer Institute Manager Stephanie McClellan, MSN, RN, CMSRN. “We are excited to have Trina Turner, MSN, RN-BC, LNC, join our staff as a dedicated lung and colorectal nurse navigator working with our patients, the community, and our physician partners to educate patients and remove these barriers.”

Bayhealth Colorectal and General Surgeon Assar Rather, MD, said, “In addition to facilitating access to timely screening, diagnosis, and treatment, and increasing community awareness and outreach, as a nurse navigator, Trina will support the processes and protocols for multidisciplinary rectal cancer care. She will also handle data collection and monitoring to track care processes, treatment, and compliance with national guidelines.”

“Having a dedicated nurse navigator for specific cancers is a significant achievement for a community based cancer program,” said Rishi Sawhney, MD, medical director of the Bayhealth Cancer Institute. “We have elevated our navigation, multidisciplinary, and survivorship programs with a dedicated resource specifically for lung and colorectal cancer patients.”
