Enhancing Cancer Patients’ Experience on the Sussex Campus

Saturday, September 1, 2018 | Bayhealth Sussex Campus, Cancer Care

One of the hallmarks of the Bayhealth Sussex Campus is a newly designed integrated cancer center. Located on the garden level of the Outpatient Center directly adjacent to the hospital, every aspect of the new facility was designed to provide the best clinical outcomes and patient experience. The new facility consolidates all healthcare providers that specialize in cancer services into one place, enabling Bayhealth’s cancer care team of medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons, nurses, social workers, and others to provide care in a convenient location.

“Having all members of the cancer care team in one location allows us to carry forward our mission to provide comprehensive multidisciplinary cancer care,” says Rishi Sawhney, MD, medical director of the Bayhealth Cancer Institute. “We look forward to providing our communities with expedited access to cancer treatment as well as valuable supportive care programs.”

The new Bayhealth Cancer Center, Sussex Campus also features an abundance of natural light to brighten the rooms and a beautiful garden just outside the windows to bring the outdoors into view, thereby creating the best healing environment. Other design highlights that will enhance patient experience in the new facility include:

  • Sliding glass panels separating the infusion bays, which gives patients the option to converse with fellow cancer patients when opened or to sit privately when closed
  • Additional space for family members to sit while their loved ones receive treatment
  • Twice as many private infusion bays for chemotherapy treatments

Below is a side-by-side comparison of some other key aspects related to the current cancer center at Bayhealth Milford Memorial and the one that will open on the new Sussex Campus early next year:

“I’ve been at Bayhealth since 2000, and we have continually elevated radiation therapy technology and treatment services,” says John Lahaniatis, MD, medical director of Radiation Oncology. “The Varian VitalBeam linear accelerator will offer patients in the southern region state-of-the-art image guidance, stereotactic radiation therapy and IMRT [intensity-modulated radiation therapy].”

John D. Shevock, FACHE, FACMPE, senior director of operations, oncology service line and executive director, Bayhealth Cancer Institute adds, “We’re very excited about this new opportunity in our southern region to offer state-of-the-art cancer services to our communities. We focused on patient access to the full spectrum of cancer services, both diagnostic and treatment, and advancing our technology capabilities to enhance the patient experience.”
