Defying gravity, speeding recovery

Bayhealth Outpatient Rehabilitation, Kent Campus now has the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill®, a new piece of equipment that is revolutionizing recovery in injured patients. It uses advanced NASA Differential Air Pressure (DAP) technology to reduce a person’s bodyweight, allowing for improved lower body movement without pain and, ultimately, a quicker return from injury.
The AlterG system is much more than a traditional treadmill. It provides live video monitoring and recording to enable better understanding of abnormal patterns as patients walk, run or do weight-bearing exercises. Built-in technology gives real-time data analytics so a patient’s progress can be easily tracked with reporting emailed to a therapist or doctor. Bayhealth is the first clinic in Kent County and one of only a few in Delaware to have the state-of-the-art equipment.
“Unweighted treadmill therapy is clinically shown to re-educate the muscles and restore range of motion,” said Bayhealth Supervisor of Athletic Trainers Stacy Trice. “Benefits are similar to aquatic therapy but without limitations such as fear of water or discomfort about going in a pool.”
Post-surgical patients or those with sports injuries can start rehabilitation sooner using the AlterG due to the bodyweight reduction that lessens the stress on muscles and damaged ligaments. It also helps stroke patients or those with neurological conditions by improving balance and coordination and addressing problems related to dizziness.
Bayhealth physical therapy team members have been excited to incorporate the AlterG into their patient sessions. “There’s less pain and no concern about falling. For many, it boosts confidence in regaining the ability to walk or run as they used to,” said Trice. “Resources like the AlterG show Bayhealth’s commitment to staying ahead of the curve in enhancing patient care and rehabilitation.”
