Our First Year by the Numbers

One year ago, on Feb. 5, 2019, Bayhealth moved over 60 patients to Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus, officially marking the opening of the new hospital. Bayhealth Outpatient Center, Sussex Campus opened the next day on Feb. 6, 2019.

Over the past year, Bayhealth has treated approximately 32,500 patients in the Emergency and Trauma Center, Sussex Campus (ED). “I am incredibly proud of the staff and what they have accomplished. We’ve adjusted to our new larger space. It’s definitely a change in the workflow that people have embraced,” remarked Julianne Wysocki Broadwater, DO, medical director, Bayhealth Emergency and Trauma Center, Sussex Campus. Wysocki says the ED has seen more than just the volume of patients grow; the acuity of the patients being treated has changed—meaning they’re treating patients who require a higher level of care.

The number of babies born at the Center for Women & Infants increased by more than 50 over the previous year, to 379 births. The first baby was born on Feb. 6, 2019, just one day after the hospital opened. OB-GYN Noel Anupol, MD performed the hospital’s first surgery in one of the state-of-the-art operating rooms, as the first baby was delivered via C-section.

As the number of people in Sussex County increases, so does the demand for physicians and support staff. Since opening day, over 31 new physicians have been granted privileges and 172 new employees have been hired. Bayhealth volunteers clocked over 36,000 hours of service. From wayfinding to pet therapy, volunteers offer a wide range of services to visitors and patients at the Bayhealth Sussex Campus.
