Bayhealth Primary Care, Smyrna Welcomes New Doctor and Nurse Practitioner

Bayhealth Primary Care, Smyrna is pleased to welcome board-certified internal medicine doctor Kenneth Lewis, MD, JD, and certified family nurse practitioner Markia Carolina, MSN, RN, FNP-C. They join John Fink, MD; Mannpreet Phambri-Komal, MD; and Mable Tsui, DO, in the practice. Both are now accepting new patients. 

The practice is part of the Bayhealth Medical Group, a partnership of highly trained physicians, their clinical staff, and an administrative support team that operates practices throughout central and southern Delaware. 

“Dr. Lewis and Markia are welcome additions to the practice as we continue to grow our primary care presence to meet the Smyrna community needs,” said Bayhealth Vice President of Physician Services for Bayhealth Medical Group Dina Perry. “Dr. Lewis brings a wealth of expertise and experience. Having spent many years as a private practice internist, a medical director and a healthcare system CEO, he has a deep understanding of patient care and meeting the medical needs of the public. Markia has a strong background in the field of nursing and working as a family nurse practitioner. I know they both will be assets to the Smyrna practice and our community.”

Most recently, Dr. Lewis served as the medical director of a high volume occupational medicine and urgent care facility in Maryland, where he provided direct patient care and physician oversight. He served for 12 years as president and CEO of Affinity Health Alliance, the former parent organization of Union Hospital in Elkton, Maryland. Overseeing a staff of 1,200 employees and 275 physicians, he led the development of a robust ambulatory services program with urgent care centers and new programs in behavioral health. Prior to that, he was the physician advisor to Union Hospital and had his own private internal medical practice where he offered office and hospital-based patient care, imaging and laboratory services. 

Dr. Lewis has a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and did his residency at University of Maryland Medical Center. He also holds a juris doctor degree from Widener University School of Law. He is very active in community boards and non-profit organizations, including serving as a volunteer physician at Shepherd’s Clinic in Baltimore which provides free medical care for the working poor. 

Markia P. Carolina, NP-CMarkia Carolina comes to Bayhealth from a private primary care practice in northern Delaware where she was a family nurse practitioner to patients of all ages. She has experience providing healthcare and social services to pediatric and neonatal populations in the public health setting. She has also worked in various neonatal intensive care units (NICU) in Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland. After completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from Temple University and a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree from Thomas Jefferson University, she went on to earn a post-master certificate at Wilmington University to become a family nurse practitioner.
