Expanding Care at Bayhealth Neurology, Dover

Tuesday, October 27, 2020 | Neurosciences

Over the last two years, Bayhealth Neurology has been growing in order to meet the needs of the community. They began offering outpatient care and have expanded even more with new providers and services. This necessitated a recent move—from sharing space with Bayhealth Neurosurgery to having their own office location at the Eden Hill Medical Center in Dover. Bayhealth Neurology now has four highly-trained physicians and four advanced practice clinicians on staff making up their medical team. Neurologists Adebola Awolesi, MD, and Usman Shehzad, MD, are the newest doctors in the practice, having recently joined Ali Sheharyar, MD.

Dr. Awolesi did her residency training at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York; Hahnemann University Hospital - Drexel University College of Medicine; and Temple University Hospital. She has a medical degree from Lagos State University College of Medicine in Nigeria. She was a chief resident in the Drexel Neurology Program and was honored by Drexel Neurosciences Institute with the McLellan Humanitarian Award in 2018.

After completion of a vascular neurology fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center, Dr. Shehzad joined Bayhealth in August. Prior to that, he was at Stony Brook University Hospital, where he did residencies in internal medicine and in their adult neurology residency program. He also served as chief resident, earned an American Academy of Neurology resident scholarship, and was inducted into their medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha. He graduated magna cum laude from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies.

The Bayhealth Neurology team provides inpatient care at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus and Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus as well as follow-up care and outpatient services in their expanded location, where they are now even better equipped to see patients for a range of neurological and cerebrovascular conditions. Some of the most common ones they treat are stroke, brain aneurysms, neuroinfections, seizure disorders, Alzheimers and other dementias, and chronic headaches or migraines.

The practice also includes interventional neurology, which is unique to the local area and offers minimally invasive treatment for complex disorders of the cerebrovascular system. Additionally, Bayhealth has a certified Stroke Program that has won national awards through the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association. The thorough care and education provided by Bayhealth Neurology team members is instrumental in helping stroke patients recover and reduce their risk of another stroke.
