Jan Gavis, DO, is a board-certified family medicine physician.
Growing up full of curiosity with an insatiable thirst for learning, Dr. Gavis’s path to become a doctor was not a direct one. In her working class upbringing, young women were not encouraged to aspire to the same types of professions as men, yet she continued to challenge herself in her schooling and employment pursuits. Her first career was in computer science and telecommunications with a stint at NASA. She then pursued a Ph.D. in psychoneuroimmunology at the University of Pennsylvania. At that time, the AIDS crisis was at its height and while volunteering at an AIDS center, a doctor working closely with her advised that she should become a physician. Twenty years following her college graduation, she earned her medical degree.
Dr. Gavis describes herself as an old fashioned small town doctor using the best aspects of modern medical technology while staying firmly rooted in humanistic beliefs. Not one to consider a pill as the only answer, she aims to treat each of her patients as a whole human being--in mind, body and spirit. Kind-hearted and personable, Dr. Gavis strives to ensure that each person in her care knows that she will truly listen to them, fight for them and always give her all for their health and wellbeing.
As a family medicine doctor who treats all ages, Dr. Gavis considers it a privilege to be a part of an entire family and a community. In her practice, she performs osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), a hand-on technique to aid in diagnosis and healing. She also has vast experience in dermatology, including excisions of cancerous and non-cancerous lesions, some cosmetic surgery procedures, laser treatments, Botox and Juvederm, as well as in sports medicine and joint injections.
When she’s not working, Dr. Gavis can usually be found near the water—sailing, kayaking, swimming or walking the beach. She also enjoys gardening, golf and reading, and is an animal lover.
