General Surgery Residency

Assar A. Rather, MD

Welcome

A letter from Interim Program Director Assar A. Rather, MD

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Bayhealth General Surgery Residency Program. We will provide surgery residents excellent training so they may become cutting edge surgeons who are thought leaders in their local medical community and in the broader surgical community. Our mission is to graduate compassionate physicians and technically excellent surgeons whether they will practice general surgery or go on to complete a fellowship.

Our curriculum will focus on manageable daily reading and developing a lifelong habit to learn and stay current. We will emphasize understanding clinical research, evidenced based medicine through journal club and performance improvement or quality improvement projects. Clinically, our residents will see the full spectrum of pathology, as members of multidisciplinary teams, as they participate and present in tumor board, and at M&M conferences. We are committed to early experience in the operating room.

Our program, our hospital and our community expect a diverse and inclusive culture while incorporating a strong spiritual foundation for the wellness our residents, staff and faculty. Finally, we are looking for residents who can help establish the training program in the years to come that will sustain a culture of learning by residents and excellence in the care of patients.

I invite you to continue reviewing the information provided which includes our faculty, curriculum, and how to apply to our program.

Sincerely,

Assar A. Rather, MD
Interim Program Director
