A Letter from Program Director Joseph M. Deutsch, MD
Founded in July of 2021, Bayhealth’s Internal Medicine Residency Program has accomplished a lot in a short amount of time. As we transition from a “new” program to an established one, my goal is to train physicians of the future who can deliver healthcare that is effective, efficient, timely and patient-centered. Our Mission
The mission of the Bayhealth Medical Center Internal Medicine residency program is to recruit, prepare, and retain outstanding physicians who will provide meaningful, exceptional, and valuable healthcare for the growing community of Kent and Sussex County Delaware. The mission of the Bayhealth Medical Center is to “strengthen the health of our community, one life at a time”. The Internal Medicine residency program is aligned with that mission and will continue putting those words into practice. By recruiting exceptional medical graduates and exposing them to the beauty and diversity of our community, the residency program aims to provide the next generation of physicians for our growing population. Treating each life… one at a time.
Aims
- The residency program promotes longitudinal relationships with patients, faculty, and healthcare providers in our community.
- We create an environment that emphasizes growth and development.
- We recognize and embrace the value of our community.
- The work environment is a place where learners can feel safe, learn from others, and feel joy.
- The residency program will develop exceptional physicians by using a curriculum and learning environment that prioritizes academic rigor, constructive feedback, and accurate evaluation of our learners.
- We identify strengths and weaknesses as a way to promote growth, and ultimately to make each of our learners the best version of themselves.
- The residency program promotes delivering healthcare that is effective, efficient, timely, and patient centered.
- Our program will continuously challenge norms, and not settle for how things have always been done.
- We support a culture of inquiry, and challenge our learners to not only ask questions, but research solutions.
- We appreciate the barriers of implicit bias and socioeconomic disparity to equality of health outcomes, but aim to overcome them.
- We see value in the diversity of our community and will train future physicians to embrace it.
