Does Bayhealth accept international students? Unfortunately, not at this time. Bayhealth is only able to take U.S. students and those attending schools in the Caribbean.
How do I apply for an elective rotation at Bayhealth? Visiting students interested in a 3rd or 4th year rotation at Bayhealth may email their CV to UME@bayhealth.org Please include your preferred course(s) and rotation dates.
How do I apply for an audition rotation with Bayhealth’s residency programs? Bayhealth participates in VSLO. Our audition rotations open for applicants every year on March 1st. Find Electives | vslo If your institution does not participate in VSLO you may email UME@bayhealth.org for an alternate application.
Is there student housing? Yes, Bayhealth offers free student housing on a first-come, first-serve basis. Most rooms are double occupancy so students will likely have a roommate. Bathrooms, laundry, and living spaces are shared. Linens are provided but students may bring their own. Students must sign a housing agreement during onboarding.
What is the meal plan? Bayhealth provides visiting students with $15/day to use in the hospital cafeterias. Students also receive the employee discount so you can easily eat at least two meals per day on campus if you wish. Bayhealth serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily, with a dinner served for the overnight shift as well and is open between mealtimes for grab and go snacks. *Funds do not roll over.
Can I bring my pet/emotional support animal/service animal? Students may bring a service dog. Emotional support animals and pets are not allowed in student housing. Please email UME@bayhealth.org to let the Program Coordinator know that you have a service dog so room assignments can be made accordingly. It will be the student’s responsibility to care for the dog, and the student will still be held accountable to the student housing agreement.
Can my significant other visit? No, only the student completing a clinical rotation may stay in student housing.
Do I need a car? Yes, students are highly encouraged to have their own car while rotating at Bayhealth. Student housing at Kent Campus is within distance of the hospital but other locations may be several miles away.
Where will I study? Students have full access to the resident lounges at both campuses. There is also a medical library at the Kent Campus with desktop computers and table space, a café, and outdoor seating areas. The Sussex Campus also has outdoor seating areas.
What is the underrepresented in medicine scholarship? Bayhealth offers the URiM scholarship as an opportunity to audition for our four residency programs: Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, General Surgery, and Emergency Medicine. Students selected for the scholarship will receive a $1,500 stipend at the conclusion of their rotation. Students will enjoy a 1:1 meeting with the residency program director, be invited to attend the GME Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee meetings, and can meet community leaders working to address SDoH in Delaware.
How do I apply for the URiM scholarship? The URiM rotations are listed on VSLO as URM – (program name). Rotations are available during a limited time frame. For those whose schools do not participate in VSLO please email UME@bayhealth.org for an alternative application.
What if I am unable to attend during the dates offered? Please email UME@bayhealth.org with your preferred dates.
How do I find housing? Students are encouraged to begin looking for housing as soon as they find our they will be spending their 3rd year at Bayhealth. The UME Program Coordinator will send out an onboarding manual that contains a non-exhaustive list of apartments in the Kent County area.
Can I take electives in my 3rd year? PCOM students will have a 4-week IM subspecialty rotation and a 4-week surgical subspecialty rotation. Students are asked to rank their preferences, and the UME Program Coordinator will attempt to schedule all students with their 1st choice, based on availability. Drexel students will spend 2 weeks of their IM block with a subspecialty and 2 weeks of their surgery block with a subspecialty. When is orientation? Orientation will take place on the Monday of the first block spent at Bayhealth. Students are not required to come to Bayhealth for any onboarding/orientation activities prior to their first block at Bayhealth. A schedule will be sent to students with the onboarding manual.
What is the dress code? Students will follow the Bayhealth policy on personal appearance and dress, wearing business casual or scrubs with their white coats and Bayhealth ID badges. The dress policy is made available during orientation.

Where will I take my exams? Regional campus and core campus students will take exams at Bayhealth in a dedicated testing room. Rotating students may elect to test at Bayhealth or their school campus. The exam schedule will be posted for students.
Will there be didactics? Yes, students will have dedicated time each month for lecture and simulation activities! The schedule will be provided for the entire academic year at orientation.
Can I do research at Bayhealth? Students may participate in research at Bayhealth with attendings and/or residents. If you have a particular interest, please talk to a preceptor or the UME Program Directors.
Is there anything fun to do in Delaware? Delaware is home to several state parks, beaches, farmers’ markets, breweries, and more. Places like Rail Haus in Dover, and Tre Sorelle in Camden often host events throughout the year including yoga, book club, run club, craft night, live music, trivia, etc.
Can I shadow a doctor at Bayhealth? Currently, Bayhealth does not offer any shadowing experiences with physicians.
