Enthusiastic and Collaborative Care Earns Downing a Sunshine Award

Tuesday, February 6, 2024 | Awards & Recognitions
Deneen Downing, CNA, cares for patients at the Bayhealth Kent Campus and has earned a Sunshine Award for her high quality care.

The Sunshine Award recognizes the vital team members who support our nursing staff and work closely together in order to provide compassionate care to patients. The Sunshine Award is an extension of the DAISY Award “as daisies need sunshine to grow.”

At Bayhealth, we have five core values: compassion, accountability, respect, integrity, and teamwork. Downing consistently embodies all of Bayhealth’s values as she is quick to lend a helping hand, no matter how big or small the task may be.

When caring for long-term patients, Downing dedicates a little more of her time and attention to caring for those patients. One of Downing’s long-term patients had transitioned into comfort care. This patient was rather quiet and withdrawn but had connected with Downing.

“The patient, who has been very quiet and withdrawn kept repeating ‘thank you, thank you, thank you!’ over and over again. Downing then got the patient set up in a recliner chair out in the hallway so that she was not just confined to her room. I have many stories like this of Downing but this one especially touched my heart,” said Downing’s nominator.

Sunshine Award honorees are nominated by patients, visitors, nurses, physicians, and employees. If you know an extraordinary nursing assistant or technician at Bayhealth who deserves a Sunshine Award, visit Bayhealth.org/Sunshine and nominate them today.
