Bayhealth UME Receives Recognition from Drexel

Bayhealth is proud to announce that three of its esteemed faculty members have been nationally recognized by Drexel University College of Medicine for their outstanding contributions to medical education. These honors highlight Bayhealth’s growing reputation as a leader in clinical teaching and mentorship through its Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) program.

Ben Hur Aguilar, MD was awarded the Clinical Educator Award for his dedication to academic medicine and exceptional mentorship. Known for his compassion and commitment, Dr. Aguilar has been instrumental in guiding students through hands-on clinical experiences, quality improvement projects and national conference presentations.

“His comprehensive approach to education makes him a cornerstone of Bayhealth’s learning environment,” said Muhammad Zohaib Ghatala, MD, core faculty for Bayhealth’s UME program.

Andrea DeSimone, DO received the Health Equity Merit Award for her leadership in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) throughout Bayhealth’s medical education programs. As Chair of the Graduate Medical Education DEI Committee, Dr. DeSimone has developed a DEI curriculum for students and residents, introduced Cultural Grand Rounds and launched a DEI-focused journal club.

“Her work has embedded DEI principles into the fabric of our medical education,” said Dr. Ghatala.

Muhammad R. Syed, MD was honored with the Dean's Special Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching, a student-nominated recognition that speaks to the deep impact of his teaching.

“Students are quite discerning about who they choose to honor,” said Shalini Shah, MD, MPH, Director of Medical Education. “Dr. Syed’s selection is a meaningful reflection of his commitment to excellence.”

These awards represent more than individual achievement — they validate the strength of Bayhealth’s UME program and its focus on immersive, team-based learning.

“Our preceptors volunteer their time to teach,” said Dr. Shah. “This recognition reminds us why we do this work and helps carry our mission forward.” Bayhealth’s UME program emphasizes clinical immersion, real-time feedback and one-on-one mentorship. Its strong partnerships with Drexel University College of Medicine and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) continue to offer valuable opportunities for students and faculty alike.
