Navigating a Cancer Diagnosis

A cancer diagnosis can be a scary, overwhelming and uncertain time for patients and their families. But Bayhealth Cancer Institute patients can find comfort knowing they are supported throughout their healthcare journey. Bayhealth’s cancer care team is like expert trail guides on a challenging hike — helping patients understand the path ahead, pointing out possible routes, connecting them with the right tools and support and walking beside them every step of the way to ensure they don’t face the road alone.

Meet Your Nurse Navigator

Along with the doctor and other specialists, the Bayhealth Cancer Institute’s team includes a nurse navigator, a vital and meaningful part of a patient's cancer care. A nurse navigator is a specially trained nurse who helps guide patients, families and caregivers through the healthcare system and supports them in overcoming challenges along the way. The nurse navigator educates patients on their diagnosis, options, treatment plans, connects them with resources and advocates for their needs throughout their cancer care.

What to Know about Your Cancer Journey

You will have many questions as you navigate your cancer journey. And there will be many ups and downs along the way. Being prepared with a list of questions can help with any anxiety, uncertainty or anguish you may be feeling. Here are a few main questions to keep in mind:

  • What is my diagnosis?
  • What are my treatment options?
  • What can I expect from the treatments (how long will they take)?
  • What are some side effects I might experience and how can I prepare my body for treatments?
  • Do I have to eat a certain diet during treatments?

Half the battle of standing up to cancer is your mental state. Going into treatments with a positive attitude will make a big difference in how you cope with the treatments. It’s okay to have down days, but there are a few things you can do to help keep a positive attitude:

  • Focus on the things you can control.
  • Lean on your support network or seek out one.
  • Exercise or take daily walks outside. If exercising is not possible, at least try to get some fresh air.
  • Choose healthy food options.
  • Try meditation, calming exercises, journaling or creative activities.

Tips for Caregivers

Supporting a loved one through cancer can be demanding. However, a caregiver's role is
vital — not only in helping manage daily needs and medical tasks, but also in offering emotional support. One of the most important things caregivers must remember is to take care of themselves — by seeking support and maintaining a healthy diet. While every situation is unique, here are five key things to keep in mind to help provide compassionate and balanced care:

  1. Be emotionally present – Listen without judgment and offer steady support.
  2. Understand the treatment plan – Stay informed to help with decisions and appointments.
  3. Coordinate with the healthcare team – Ask questions, relay concerns and ensure there’s a clear communication line.
  4. Help with legal and financial matters – Be aware of insurance, advanced directives and financial support resources.
  5. Manage practical needs – Help with daily tasks, medication and transportation.
