Stay Healthy This Season by Staying Up to Date on Vaccines

As colder weather arrives, we need to protect ourselves from viruses that can cause the flu, pneumonia, COVID and RSV as they begin to circulate more easily. “Staying current with recommended vaccines is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself and those around you from serious, preventable illnesses,” said Bayhealth Emergency Medicine Resident Alpha Mansaray, Jr., MD.

  • Seasonal flu vaccines are tested and updated each year to match circulating strains, which can help prevent severe symptoms and hospitalizations.
  • Pneumonia vaccines are essential for adults 65 and older and people with chronic conditions, as pneumonia is one of the leading causes of severe respiratory illness and hospitalizations nationwide.
  • RSV poses significant risks for infants, older adults and those with weakened immune systems. New vaccines, in addition to monoclonal options, can offer added protection.
  • COVID variants continue to emerge, so making sure you and those around you are up to date on vaccinations is key to reducing the risk of complications.

“Vaccines not only lower your risk of getting sick but also help protect your loved ones,” said Dr. Mansaray. “In addition, staying up to date on your vaccinations helps reduce strain on healthcare resources and supports the overall health of our community.”

Dr. Mansaray recommends you speak with a clinician about which vaccines are right for you and to schedule your vaccination appointments early in the season.
