About

John Mitchell, MD, is a board-certified and fellowship-trained general and critical care surgeon specializing in trauma and is the director of trauma surgery at Bayhealth Kent Campus.

Growing up in the country of Guyana, he always had an interest in medicine. Several life experiences of serious illness among family members and dealing with tragic loss confirmed to him that becoming a physician to care for others was his calling.

Dr. Mitchell came to the U.S. at the age of 16. While in medical school in New York, he made the choice to specialize in surgery after his father developed an aneurysm. Ever since, it’s been his passion to use his expertise in doing all he can for each patient he sees.

In his more than 20-year medical career, Dr. Mitchell has had extensive experience performing surgery and providing critical care in surgical intensive care units and emergency departments in medical facilities throughout the U.S. and back in Guyana. In addition to his work in critical care, trauma, general surgery, and other surgical sub-specialties and as a surgical consultant, he’s been a director of critical care and trauma services at Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut, the Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York, and most recently at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Of utmost importance to Dr. Mitchell is being honest with patients and fully accountable in his work. He is careful and thorough in doing everything necessary to help every patient. Through surgery and other interventions, he strives to offer them the best chance for a positive outcome and recovery from serious and often life-threatening conditions. Seeing a patient he’s cared for overcome multiple injuries and regain function and get back to life is what fulfills him most.

In his spare time, Dr. Mitchell enjoys being with his wife and two grown children and traveling. Along with a former colleague, he does volunteer work in the Caribbean and developing nations by providing surgery for children with limb injuries and deformities. He’s also a big sports enthusiast and loves watching games.
