Rishi Sawhney, MD, is a medical oncologist and hematologist who also serves as the medical director of the Bayhealth Cancer Institute.
Dr. Sawhney knew he wanted to become a doctor at a very young age, as he was always awestruck by how his own family physician and her team could not only heal patients but also restore their confidence and well-being.
He chose to become an oncologist for two reasons. First, oncology is a dynamic field of medicine with scientific advances happening on a daily basis, something he finds to be exciting. Second, but equally important, is the unique relationship oncologists build with their patients and their families since going through cancer is unlike any other experience.
Coming from a large, research-oriented University Center, Dr. Sawhney was excited by the opportunity to bring the latest clinical research and cutting-edge medicine to cancer patients and community members in both suburban and rural areas of Delaware. He also considers central Delaware to be the best place in the country to practice medicine and an excellent one to raise his family because of the close-knit community it offers.
Outside of work, Dr. Sawhney enjoys playing basketball and tennis, spending time at the beach, and traveling.
